Das Motiv ist eine weitere Thematisierung des Kapitels 24 von r. h. Quaytman,
, Chapter 24, das im Jahr 2012 im Museum Abteiberg zu sehen war. Das gesamte Kapitel handelt von Geschichte und Geschichten des Mönchengladbacher Museums, das nunmehr zum ersten Ort einer institutionellen Einzelausstellung in Deutschland wurde.

Der Kontext dieses Museums prägt auch das Format des Kapitels: Quaytman zeigt erstmalig und ausschließlich Quadrate, in drei variierenden Größen. Und er bestimmt auch ein neues Sujet der künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung: Inspiriert durch die Sammlung der Kunst um 1960 (Fontana, Manzoni, Klein) geht es hier um die Oberflächen von Malerei, um die stoffliche Materialität und eine haptisch-sinnliche Visualität in ihren Leinwänden.

"... In Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass das Quadrat der Schlüssel zu Quaytmans Kapitel ist, beschreiben wir (jetzt jedoch) wirklich eine Spiralbewegung, schrauben uns hinaus in unerwartete Darstellungen von Schlitzen und Kratzern, glitzerndem Glas und Kunstpelz, Ultraschallbildern und Beschneidungen.

Die Spirale wird sich von Mönchengladbach weg- und Quaytmans Werk in unerwartete Richtungen drehen. Und die Spirale führt nach außen, nicht zurück in ihr Zentrum. Wir lägen völlig falsch mit der Annahme, Quaytmans profunde Aufmerksamkeit für die Historien der modernistischen Abstraktion und die Generation der Nachkriegsneoavantgarde seien der Ausdruck einer nostalgischen oder schwermütigen Praxis.

, Chapter 24 veranlasst die Malerei dazu, um ihre Historien zu kreisen, doch zugleich führt es sie nach draußen, auf neue, in die Zukunft weisende Bahnen."
