Das Motiv entstammt unübersehbar der Thematik, die Rita McBride in der Außeninstallation „Donkey’s Way“ auf dem neuen Sonnenhausplatz in Mönchengladbach zeigt. Es sind drei Konturenschnitte von Eseln, versammelt auf einer Schablone (engl. template) aus Federstahl.

Schablonen und Kurvenlineale sind langjährige Sujets in McBrides Werk. Sie spricht gerne von diesen Hilfsmitteln, die in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten mit dem Einbruch der digitalen Medien aus den Ateliers von Architekten, Ingenieuren, Grafikern und Designern verschwanden. Die US-amerikanische Künstlerin, seit 2003 Professorin an der Düsseldofer Kunstakademie, seit 2013 deren Rektorin, sieht in den Schablonen eine vergangene Zeit, die Jüngeren kaum mehr begreiflich ist. Sie vermitteln schlagartig die Vergangenheit der Moderne und ihrer Gestalter und zeigen das Handwerk des Zeichnens und Formens in seinem Übergang vom Unikat zum Multiple.

Die Edition der Esel-Schablone für den Museumsverein Mönchengladbach zeigt die weitere Funktionalität der Schablone als Vervielfältigungsmittel und Klischee für Souvenirs. McBride bietet sozusagen die Schablone für die Fanartikel, die jetzt angefragt werden, nachdem sich der anfängliche Widerstand gegen “die Esel“ in eine weit verbreitete Sympathie für ebendiese Tiere und ihre Darstellung auf dem Stadtplatz gewandelt hat.

Die Federstahlobjekte werden komplett musealisiert mit Rahmen angeboten, können aus dieser Einrahmung jedoch leicht befreit werden, falls Sammler eine Aufstellung als Objekt bevorzugen.
